In the healthcare industry, for example, there’s an act called HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Passed in 1996, HIPAA’s breach notification rule means healthcare providers must let their patients know whenever unsecured protected health information has been breached, potentially compromising the security and integrity of their data. Furthermore, it is also your responsibility to notify the customers, and any other parties involved, that you will be taking all reasonable measures to fix the situation (based on state legislature).
